Since I first saw Mad Men, I couldn’t stop thinking about 50s style clothes that the makers managed to recreate so beautifully. Whether you are in love with the red hair and deliciously curvaceous Joan, slightly preppy librarian Peggy or a classic cold blond beauty in a oh so 50s Grace-Kelly-style Betty. I love them all and am so glad the fourth season is back on since last week. Men fashion is just as fabulous, I’m really liking the Don Draper classic looks but also the petrol blue suits worn by Pete Campbell. The show is so hyped up ever since president Obama admitted to being one of its fans, it would appear that Marc Jacobs, Miuccia Prada and the fabulous duo Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana have also been keenly following the show.
These are some of my favourite clothes inspired by 50s in the Mad Men style. Key to the Mad Men style can be described as
- below the knee length floaty skirts or shirt dresses in pastel colours in style of Betty Draper,
- skin tight bright coloured work dresses that emphases those curves in the style of Joan
- very work appropriate separates such as skirts and checked jabot blouse
I personally don’t really wear anything that is below my knee as it just doesn’t suit me, so was extremely happy to see that most of the fall 2010 trends were actually fairly shorter then the classic 50s skirts and dresses. To avoid looking to much like a caricature of the style I would avoid wearing it with red lipstick even though that is what Mad Men women tend to do, also note that none of the designers matched the outfits with strong lips. It suppose to be an inspiration rather than a total head to toe outfit.
Anyway, hope you enjoy this very feminine trend that is so flattering and stylish for women of all shapes and looks.
Izabela xoxo
